Three South Sons
Reunited Here The three sons of
Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd R. South. R.L., Gordon and Leo were joyfully
reunited at the home of their parents in Glen Avon recently, after three years
in the naval and merchant marine services. None of the Brothers was aware
the others would be home.
R.L. South, MM 3-c, USN, returned on the USS
Indiana with the third fleet, docking in an Francisco September 28. He
arrived home the following day.
Overseas 21 months, he served in the battles for Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
He was in the bay, off Hiroshima when the
first Atomic Bomb fell. Serving in 12 major battles, he fortunately
escaped injury.
Machinist South received his basic training in
San Diego and served 20 months in the Merchant Marines prior to serving in the
Navy. His wife, Mrs. Joy South made her home in Los Angeles during
his overseas duty.
Gordon South, first with the Merchant Marines,
later enlisted in the Navy, was given a medical discharge and is now back in the
Merchant Marines. His wife, Mrs. Ilene South, with their two sons
Gordon & Gary live in Culver City. He was overseas two months the first time and
four months this time.
Leo South in the Merchant Marines three years,
has served overseas most of that time. When a student at Poly High
he won the football trophy in 1942. His wife, Mrs. Betty
South, lives in Los Angeles.
